Speaking to The Candidate for International Women's Day, Kerry Carrick, Strategic Performance Director at Space & Time, tells us how she has managed to find the balance between a successful career in a Digital Marketing Agency with an often hectic home life!

A career "full of twists and turns"

I’ve been at Space & Time for nearly 14 years, and my path to progression has been full of twists and turns, with a few pit stops along the way. I came to S&T with experience in retail management and media sales, starting off as an Account Executive right in the middle of the 2008 Global Financial crisis. Then just a couple of years later my Husband was diagnosed with Kidney Disease and had to give up work immediately, which forced me into the position of main breadwinner, caregiver, housekeeper, PA and chauffer almost overnight. The senior management team and my colleagues at Space & Time were (and still are) a huge support, but through my own decision my career took a back seat as I had to focus on my son.

Dealing with imposter syndrome

Space & Time gave me the space and time (pun intended) I needed to get through those challenging years, constantly supporting me, reassuring me I was getting it right when I felt like the plates I was spinning were flying all over the place! And when the time came for me to return to work full-time once my son approached high school age, and I was ready to focus more on myself they rewarded me with progression and I’m very grateful to be in the role I am today. Like many women, I battle with imposter syndrome, but thankfully Space & Time recognised my abilities before I knew they were there.

Women are inspirational!

Most of my clients are females holding a senior management position within the housebuilding sector, a traditionally male dominated industry, and I take inspiration from each and every one of them. Space & Time are driving forward with female representation in management, the business recognises challenges females face, has a progressive workplace culture and has developed support policies such as mental health and wellbeing and menopause support.

Finding positives in the challenges

Whilst working through the pandemic has been the most challenging time of my working life, it has brought some positives – the introduction of flexible hours and hybrid working has been a great benefit, it makes managing a busy home and work life that much easier. Thinking back, if I’d have been able to incorporate flexible working and hybrid work from home into my working week when my son was younger, I may have felt more confident in pushing forward with my career, not feeling like I had to choose one over the other.

That’s why the International Women's Day movement is so important – giving women the confidence to believe they are worthy of their professional capacity, that their personal situation and experience is valuable and having the skills to balance a hectic family life with a career is something to be celebrated!
