Founder of Girl Power Marketing - Annie-Mai tells us about her journey in the Marketing industry, how gender bias' could be improved and how she champions other women wanting to start their own businesses or level up in their career!

What is gender representation / equity in your industry like?

Like many industries, there’s more to be done when it comes to gender equity – especially within the marketing world. Some things businesses can do to improve gender equity:

Remove biases/provide training on unconscious biases
Fair compensation and promotion processes
Inclusive company culture
Flexible and supportive employee benefits

What keeps you motivated?

If you had asked me a few years ago, I wouldn’t know how to answer but then I learnt about core values, which are your fundamental beliefs that drive your behaviour. One of my core values is curiosity, I’m always wanting to learn something new and I'd say that's the biggest driving force behind how I stay motivated in not only what I do professionally but personally too.

What is your advice for other women who may want to start their own business, or level up their careers?

Remember that it takes privilege to be in the position where you can start your own business, and you don’t need to start your own business in order to be successful. Understand your core values and work out what success looks like to you, then work towards that.

Your career path - how did you get to where you are today?

Honestly by pure luck and privilege. I always thought that I would go to university, but I really struggled with my mental health in my younger years and didn’t manage to get through college. And so I never imagined that I could have a career because when you’re in school, it feels like you have to go to college or university to be somewhat successful. My mum worked for a digital marketing agency, and they very kindly let me do some admin work there. After a few years of trying different things out, I realised that I had a strong passion for marketing and specifically – social media. I started Girl Power Marketing as a documentation of my journey into marketing which quickly became an educational resource to help other people kickstart their careers too. After a couple of years, the opportunities that kept coming up were incredible but not something I could commit to while I was working at my other job. So in January, I bit the bullet and decided to take Girl Power Marketing full-time.

What or who inspired you to create your business and begin championing other women in business?

Honestly? SO many people including my mum, my best friend Sophie and my previous therapist Jane – people who have helped shape the way I am over the years and helped give me the confidence I needed. Organisations like Girl Up, Women In Business Network and AllBright, to name a few, all inspired me to start this journey.
