The role may specialise in a particular channel like branding, offline or digital, or it may be sector specific like travel, eCommerce or B2B for example. Account Directors usually have at least 3 or 4 years experience in an account-handling role before qualifying for this position.
Account Directors are usually career motivated, having been through the junior stages of managing accounts and reaching this level. If career paths aren’t clear, this may prompt the search for a new role. Or maybe it’s a new sector that an AD is after? Or larger budgets? Or an agency that is bigger, with larger clients and more budget to spend? But the opposite can also be true, some Account Directors have had enough of the large corporate agency environment and are keen to join a smaller, independent agency to fulfil their career aspirations.
