This blog is a must read for anyone considering registering with a Digital Marketing Recruitment Agency to assist them with their job search in digital media and digital marketing.

With the start of a New Year comes the opportunity for a new start. If one of your New Year's resolutions is to break out of that job you don't like, and to find your passion again; you may want to think about using a recruitment agency to help you.

By using a recruitment agency, you will effectively be represented by a sales person; your consultant will have specific skills that enable them to sell your experience and talents to chosen companies. This will put you in the best possible position with employers as they will be given all the information they need, in the way they want it (each to their own!). Your consultant will handle all negotiations for you so all you need to focus on are the amazing opportunities that are being sent your way! Clients trust us to find them the best candidates and lots of them use us exclusively, so no other agency have our jobs.

In order for you to get the most out of working with a marketing recruitment agency, I have put together a few tips to bear in mind. This is by no means an exhaustive list; just a number of key things that I have picked up during my time working at a recruitment agency.

Your CV

  • This is the most important thing in the recruitment process! This document represents you; your experience, your skills, your personality - take care of it!
  • Make it clear, concise, and be positive! Make sure the most relevant parts of your experience are highlighted and at the top - employers care more about your employment history than the fact that you got a B in GCSE Geography!
  • Put your CV together in Word rather than making it a pdf document - agencies tend to take out your personal details before sending your CV to companies, and editing a pdf CV can cause headaches!
  • Do not use tables! Although they make everything seem neat they are also very difficult for agencies to use as they have to brand your CV before sending it.

Returning Calls/Messages

  • Stay in touch with your consultants - we understand that it might not be possible to answer all calls, however be sure to return the call - it could be an important interview or even job offer!
  • There's nothing more frustrating than having the perfect job for someone and then not being able to get through to them. Recently we had a candidate who was interested in a particular position and kept promising to send her CV, but just never did! This meant that they missed out on an opportunity for a new job, and we wasted our time!

Updating Your Consultant

  • Whether you are just informing your consultant that you have changed what you are looking for, or that you have secured a different job; always keep them in the loop!
  • If you are in the middle of a relevant qualification, make sure you inform your agency when it is completed - it will need adding to your CV and could be the difference between getting your dream job and not!
  • We recently had a candidate who was completing a Social Media internship and kept us up-to-date throughout the whole thing. This meant that we could register him before actually having the qualification, find him a job, and then place him the moment he finished.

Honesty

  • We're all human! If you don't want to go to an interview, if you don't want to accept a position, if you have other interviews in the pipeline - make sure you let your consultant know!
  • At the end of the day we're just trying to do our job and need to know what else is going on.

Build A Relationship!

  • Make sure you meet with your consultant as soon as possible - they will want to meet with you too!
  • At the end of the day we're not just selling your experience, but your personality too! We can do that more effectively having met you. We can match your personality to certain companies/roles, we can gauge how you would do in interviews, and we can 'sell' you to companies much better. This goes back to communication; however it really is key! After meeting your consultant, make sure you stay in touch - phone calls, text, email, LinkedIn, carrier pigeon; whichever suits you best!
