Lead Data Engineer – £90,000– Banking - Manchester

Join a well-established player in the Banking industry who for ten consecutive years have held a four-star Fairbanking Mark and a 4 star rating on Trustpilot to recognise that we help customers manage money well.

This incredibly successful business has undergone a huge digital transformation in the past few years. For example, they’ve revolutionised their mobile banking app so that it now has 3x the function it had when they started, and have really exciting plans in the pipeline. Their aim is to have the group be one of the leading digital businesses in Manchester and they are well on their way to achieving this vision.

It’s been incredible to watch them grow and develop over the past few years into a business that on one hand is slick, efficient and commercial, but also fosters a culture of putting people first – whether this by ensuring staff are happy, fulfilled and healthy, or the vast amount of volunteering and fundraising they do for good causes each year.

They are now looking for a Lead Data Engineer to join a diverse and friendly team, building dataflows into a data lake and data warehouse from a wide range of sources.

The wider Data Team is currently moving from a SQL Server based stack to a cloud-native solution in AWS. You will steer the development of a cloud native data platform that will enable sophisticated analysis and data science.

In this role you will:

  • Plan with analysts and data scientists on a regular basis to translate requirements into solutions and ensure delivery of successful business outcomes.
  • Architect the data warehouse and data lake for the cloud.
  • Ensure environments are stable and available.
  • Lead a team using Agile Kanban workflows to safely code, review, test and deploy solutions, using source control to manage changes.
  • Manage the DevOps processes for Data, and any tooling that guides the processes.
  • Design and build with the on-premise Microsoft BI stack, including SSIS, SQL Server and Power BI.
  • Design and build with an AWS-based BI stack, including Lambda, Redshift and Matillion.
  • Design and build connections to APIs, flat files, databases and data streams to our data lake (ELT).
  • Shape data from our data lake and form into a Kimball data warehouse (ETL).

About you:

  • Be experienced leading, mentoring and training a team of data engineers.
  • Be experienced with ETL tools like SQL, SSIS, AWS, Lambda and Python.
  • Be experienced with data warehouse concepts, including Kimball methodology.
  • Be experienced with SQL Server and Redshift management.
  • Have enthusiasm for deduction and problem solving, with a logical and curious mind.
  • Have a positive, enthusiastic and methodical attitude to development, business intelligence and data science.
