International Trade and Customs Manager (EU) - 70,000 EURO – Frankfurt – Automotive

Join a fast-growing international business who exports to over 50 countries around the world and therefore have the need to efficiently navigate and ensure compliance with numerous markets.

They’re looking for an International Trade and Customs Manager who will be responsible for supporting the team developing and implementing robust international trade and customs processes in the European Union. These processes will enable them to meet compliance obligations and to fully utilize trade simplifications and customs special procedures.

Responsibiltites

You will work both with internal cross-functional partners within the business and with external partners and suppliers to ensure customs and international trade compliance obligations in the EU namely:

  • Support the Senior Manager for International Trade & Customs in defining and developing processes and controls and identifying and implementing robust duty mitigation measures.
  • Manage Customs Operations resources in their day-to-day and strategic activities. This includes managing interdisciplinary colleagues and managing external customs brokers
  • Serve as primary point of contact at for all customs-related customs queries.
  • Take a pro-active role in validating all import / export information provided by other areas of the business and suppliers and urgently addressing / escalating any areas of concern or weakness, including leading cross-functional meetings to resolve issues.
  • Build and develop an effective network of contacts across the businesses to support the operation of all aspects of import / export activities.
  • Independently develop standard operating procedures working in partnership with other functions in order to ensure compliance across the business.
  • Develop and conduct regular risk assessments in relation to business import/export operations and identifying contingency plans where necessary.
  • Develop and deliver regular progress reports / presentations to communicate status of import / export operations to the top management and driving actions within functions.
  • Independently seek out efficiency improvements to optimize Trade and Customs operations.

This role requires a high level of internal and external communication skills as well as relationship building with both internal and external partners. This role requires a large amount of cross department data sharing so a strong ability to efficiently communicate with the rest of the business is key. You would also need to develop a good working relationship with third parties and external bodies such as local Chambers of Commerce and local customs authorities.

The candidate will be required to provide support to from both a strategic / projects perspective and also day-to-day operational issues and challenges. Strategic projects will include for example, identifying cost-reduction and compliance enhancing opportunities and developing and leading projects to implement those opportunities and also drafting policies and procedures. Operationally, the candidate will be required to support the operations team and answering queries relating to the importation / exportation of goods in the EU.

This role will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to be an integral leader within the function on its journey to the desired future operating model. This will itself bring progression opportunities within the function and the wider business

This role will require some travel to suppliers, partners and facilities (less than 10%)

Experience      

The candidate must have detailed technical knowledge and proven experience of customs either in Practice or in an in-house role. The candidate will ideally also have experience of working with, or in, automotive / manufacturing environments.

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Detailed technical and operational knowledge and experience of customs and international trade legislation and requirement in the EU.
  • Strong IT skills using office tools (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • A self-starter able to work independently and/or as part of a small dynamic team.
  • Ability to work cross functionally and build effective relationships
  • Good communication skills

Preferred Experience              

  • Knowledge and experience of automotive, retail or logistics supply chain operations.
  • Tax related knowledge and experience (EU / German)
  • Degree qualification, ideally Finance related
